Summer Skin Care Tips
You don't need to be a doctor or dermatologist to have great summer skin. You just need a few simple summer skin care tips —and I've got them! I'm going to tell you how drinking water, using sunscreen, and exfoliating can help you keep your skin in great shape all summer long.
Drink water.
Drinking water is the best way to ensure that your skin receives all of the hydration it needs. Your body uses water to transport nutrients, flush out toxins and keep your blood pressure at an optimal level. Without enough water in your system, these functions can become impaired.
If you have eczema or another form of sensitive skin, you should make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will help keep your body hydrated and improve symptoms like dryness and itchiness.
Use sunscreen.
Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do to protect your skin from the sun. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every single day—even if it's cloudy, raining, or snowing outside.
Use a moisturizer before applying sunscreen, especially on dry areas like your hands and elbows. This will help prevent the sunscreen from clumping up or feeling too heavy on those areas where you want to wear little makeup but still need some protection from UV rays.
If you have sensitive skin, look for formulas labeled "non-irritating" and "hypoallergenic" as well as those that are free of fragrances, parabens (a preservative found in many cosmetics), dyes, and alcohols (which can dry out your face). If you find yourself having an allergic reaction after applying sunscreens—such as redness or breakouts—try switching brands until you find one that works for you!
Exfoliate regularly (but not too vigorously).
A gentle exfoliator can be used on your face, body, and neck. Don't overdo it: don't use a scrub on your chest or back as they are more sensitive areas.
Cleanse your skin well but don't overdo it.
- Avoid harsh, drying cleansers. Look for products that are free of sulfates and other harsh detergents—they can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it red, tight, and flaky.
- Use makeup remover only when necessary. If you wear makeup every day, use a gentle eye makeup remover daily to remove the buildup of mascara and eyeliner that can irritate your eyes as the day goes on. If you're not wearing much in terms of color or coverage on your face (like me), skip this step altogether!
- One trick I learned from my dermatologist is to splurge on a good cleanser that doesn't strip my sensitive skin while still getting rid of dirt and oil. The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel works like magic! After rinsing off with warm water, my skin feels smooth without being tight or dry afterward - just like how it should be after washing our faces : )
Stay away from salt water.
As you're probably aware, salt water can do a number on your skin. This is because it dries out your skin and increases the chances of developing irritation or even sunburn. Salt water also ages the skin faster and makes it more susceptible to skin cancer. The best way of skin care during summer is by staying out of salt water as much as possible!
